What’s Next?
The referendums were passed in 2022 and implemented into Skokie law in 2024.
Skokie’s next local elections (April 2025) will kick off our transition to the new system.
What does that mean?
Voters:
By eliminating previous advantages, we should see more competition and choice on the ballot – our votes will matter.
Voters will have a District Trustee whom they can turn to for local needs.
Voting for fewer positions at once will mean we can take the time to do our research about each one.
Each vote will mean more when we vote for District Trustees.
Candidates:
The new system will open the door to more candidates, more competition, and new ideas.
Without party labels and with more competition, candidates will have to engage voters and show why they deserve your vote.
District Trustee candidates will have smaller populations to engage.
With more competition, elected Board members might better represent their voters.
It makes way for candidates:
Without party affiliation.
Without political connections or experience.
To run a more affordable campaign, without big donors or deep pockets.
Fewer barriers means that…
Any Skokie citizen with ideas & a message can run for office –
including YOU!
